Princeton grad, care to explain how isolation and economic sanctions will work in Iran?

It won't really, at least not directly. If you impose sanctions on Iran, the common people will suffer. Iran will, and has, clamp down on whatever it has and the rich will get it first. The only hope is that sanctions create conditions for civil unrest to the point where Iran's government has to reconsider its actions.
