What can I do to help an injured mallard duck at a local pond?

The duck has a broken leg and I feel so sorry for it. I want to help but I'm afraid it's illegal to take the bird and go to a vet. Who can help the poor bird out? I'm afraid he's going to die. I often go to this place to feed ducks and geese.
